How it works

From manuscriptto finished audiobook.

Five stages take one book from manuscript to a finished audiobook. Each is shown here with the real record of a novel that went through them: its words, its cast, a directed line, the quality checks and the package it shipped as.

  1. 1Stage 1 of 5 · Prepare manuscript

Upload the book. Get a straight answer.

Marvox reads the manuscript the way an editor would: chapters, who speaks every line, the names that need a pronunciation, and how long the finished audio will run. That’s the free Book Check, with an early chapter of your own book in full cast (up to 6,000 words).

  2. 2Stage 2 of 5 · Build & approve cast

    A voice for every character.

Each speaking character is matched to a distinct voice from what the book says about them. You hear the cast before anything is produced, change any voice you like, and approve it.

    • Nathan

The father, and the book’s first-person narrator

      Adam41 lines

    • Crystal

His wife, holding the family together

      Bella15 lines

    • Dr. Galveston

      The pediatric oncologist

      Bill10 lines

    • Staff member

A teenage staff member on the ward

      Jessica5 lines

    • Nurse White

      The oncology ward’s nurse

      Matilda5 lines

    • David

Their son, in a birthday memory

      Brian4 lines

Cast by Marvox from the manuscript. Nathan tells the story in the first person, so his voice carries the narration too.
  3. 3Stage 3 of 5 · Direct scenes & pronunciations

Direct any line in plain words.

Tell a character how to read a line (“barely a whisper”) and hear the retake in the same voice. Keep it and only that line changes. Pronunciations you set hold across the whole book.

    More on the Director

“Just tell me my David isn’t dying!”

    Pick a note

“barely a whisper, holding back tears”

Nothing changes until you keep a take.

  4. 4Stage 4 of 5 · Review audio & corrections

Every chapter is measured before it ships.

Listen chapter by chapter with the cast visible and fix what you hear. Marvox measures the audio against ACX’s technical spec, the benchmark audiobook stores use. Anything that fails is named, with the number that failed.

Measured on every chapter · ACX’s technical audio spec

    • Loudness. RMS between −23 and −18 dB

    • Peaks. No peak above −3 dB

    • Noise floor. At or below −60 dB

    • Room tone. 0.5–1 s at the head, 1–5 s at the tail

    • No dropouts. No silence inside a chapter longer than 3.5 s

Each chapter’s numbers go into qc_report.md in your package. If any chapter fails, Marvox won’t build the package until it’s fixed.
  5. 5Stage 5 of 5 · Package for publishing

A finished audiobook, in one download.

When every chapter passes, Marvox builds the package: the chapter files, your cover, the cast sheet, pronunciations, the quality report and a checklist for publishing it yourself.
